Celebrities in the News

Every parent’s nightmare (protecting their kids from harm) and the results of peer
pressure while growing up.It’s all about the choices you make … and some of that comes with age and experience.  I’m referencing the news about the adorable and cute Disney Star, Hannah Montana aka/Miley Cyrus  who was recently videotaped using a bong during her 18th birthday party (which of course was leaked to the public).  Miley allegedly says she was smoking salvia and not marijuana.  Salvia, a legal psychedelic herb and has been in the media lately.  Salvia usage has historical roots in Mexico and South America, and was used by
Curanderos to help them fall into trances.  The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration website has this to say, “due to salvia’s hallucinogenic effects, there is a substantial risk of injury or death as a result of impaired judgment due to disruptions of sensory and cognitive functions.”  It  is unpredictable with each user and is a hallucinatory, mind-altering drug that can be lethal.

Of course, it was leaked onto the internet, and her father, Billy Ray, seemed to be as shocked as everyone else.  Ray took toTwitter  to address the controversy, and he seems so sad (it’s called being a parent)  ….  he wrote:

“Sorry guys. I had no idea. Just saw this stuff for the first time myself.
I’m so sad. There is much beyond my control right now.”

Have to really feel sorry for him, the timing isn’t great since he has his own “stuff” going on (He and wife Tish are going through  divorce proceedings right now.)

I really hope Miley grows up a little quicker in her choices.  I think she is cute as a “button.”   Have to admit — even though I’m an adult, her show is a guilty pleasure.   She is only 18 but her voice is a gift , and yes, she is allowed to make mistakes.  Being “good” or wholesome is not necessarily a bad thing, but at 18, some kids don’t want the image.  I’m really hoping she doesn’t turn out to be a celebrity that disappoints as she gets a little older.  You get tired (and sad) of all these celebrities who are great kids and then grow up to have major, major problems.  Hope she can avoid that  and the public scrutiny!

Furthermore, when are celebrities and us “regular” folks ever going to learn that with digital cameras, camera phones and everything else out there that you have to watch you P’s and Q’s.  It is not just “Big Brother” watching you anymore!  Its you friends, “so-called” friends and strangers.  Everything can be taped and shared.  You have to be careful out there!

Just watched the trailer for “The Cove“; a new documentary by actor, director and producer, Fisher Stevens. He produced “The Cove,” an Oscar-nominated film that won the best documentary award from the National Board of Review in 2009. It’s timely, with the recent horrific tragedy that occurred last week at SeaWorld in Orlando, Floridawhere Dawn Brancheau lost her life doing the job that she loved.

The Cove” is a wide eyed view on the dolphin trade and slaughter. Fisher said, ” I assumed like many others that dolphins and orcas enjoyed living at Sea World and other marine parks. They always seemed to be smiling, jumping merrily around their tanks, eager to put on a show for human spectators. However, when I met Ric O’Barry, my perspective changed. O’Barry was the man responsible for capturing Kathy — the original “Flipper” — from the wild and helping to create the language used to train dolphins to do tricks and flips. When Cathy died in his arms some years later, O’Barry realized the whole process of capturing and training dolphins was wrong.”

O’ Barry co-wrote the book “Behind the Dolphin Smile: A True Story that Will Touch the Hearts of Animal Lovers Everywhere” where he explains that the smiles you see on dolphins are not the reflection of happiness. In actuality, they hate to be enclosed in their holding tanks and are often not fed until it is time to perform their daily routines. During his time as a trainer, O’Barry learned dolphins had true feelings — they would get depressed, stressed out, even suicidal. In some parks, the trainers have to give the animals Maalox and Tagamet. Read an excerpt here.

O’Barry realized that the dolphins, whom he made perform tricks for treats, had just as much right to their lives as he did to his. Instead of feeling clever, he felt that he’d been callous. From that moment on, O’Barry dedicated his life to freeing dolphins that are held hostage around the world. Instead of working for the billion-dollar dolphin captivity industry, he now liberates exploited dolphins – he “un-trains” these intelligent marine mammals and returns them to their natural habitat.

The Cove is also going to take you to Japan where they capture, slaughter and trade dolphins.

Check out the trailer and info page and their blog on how you can help save the dolphins.

Every rockabilly gal or guy looks great in a pair of shades.  Whether driving down the road; shading your eyes on the beach; or even hiding those baby blues in a game of  poker.  A pair of shades can change “everything.”  Shades can make you a fashion icon on “your street,” become your “brand;” the envy of your friends and illicet a prayer from the best of friends that you accidently lose them.

Sunglasses in themselves are an iconic accessory.  Popular in movies, for creating cool characters and sex appeal.  Take the opening scene of “Cool Hand Luke”  a movie about a man  played by Paul Newman who refuses to conform to life in a rural prison. The Boss Man otherwise known as the “man with no eyes,”  watches Newman  in reflective sunglasses; which set the tone for the movie and helped ensure the classic line “”What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.”  We have Steve McQueen in “Thomas Crown Affair,”where McQueen is stylish and sophisticated; to the classic Carey Grant in “It Takes a Thief,” as the suave cat burgler.  And, don’t forget Tom Cruise in the pop culture classic “Risky Business.”

Granted I love the old movies and movie stars.  But, everything old is new again and leading this trend is a great new selection of sport-inspired sunglasses that are vintage inspired, trendy, sporty and affordable. Italian designer Carrera owned by the Italian sunglass house Safilo, has re-launched their “CARRERA VINTAGE” line; an upgraded version of their own vintage sunglasses which were originally launched in 1956 for the sportsman in “fast paced sports,” notably racing.

The brand name “Carerra” was derived from the Carrera Panamericana (the annual car race that stretches across Mexico.) Carrera still specializes in sports sunglasses but it is their modern and vintage sunglass range that has made them one of the coolest brands of sunglasses in today’s fashion market. Relaunched in Europe (2007) they are just now being released into the States. The new “vintage” line pays tribute to their 1950s line of racing glasses, but plays them up, referencing their ’80s design style of oversized frames and colors that pop. Although the new line is incredibly fun, they’re also incredibly functional, as their large surface area provides optimum UV protection. They are the perfect spring collection for sport enthusiasts and every day use. The Aviator styles are hugely popular and are worn by many being worn by many major ‘A’ list stars of today, including Jamie Foxx, Alex Meraz, Don Johnson, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Rhianna and Lady Gaga.

Singer and fashion icon Lady Gaga is wearing the “Champion” model which is the brand’s signature and most colorful style in its recently relaunched “vintage collection.   In  her latest music video “Bad Romance,” the lead single off GaGa’s upcoming album The Fame Monster. “Bad Romance” premiered during Paris fashion week.

“Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! Roma-roma-mamaa! Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!” The music is a perfect driving soundtrack that is not only listenable and danceable ; but a great soundtrack for the fashion runway. Watch the video;   you will notice that the distinctive and fashionable sunglasses enhances Lady GaGa’s fearless and confident performance. This reminds you that the Lady Gaga experience is visual as well as musical.  Should we say “accessories make the girl.”  No, of course not.  But it helps. : )

Customized with retro detailing, the new models from Carrera have achieved cult status and make a bold fashion statement that is popular with teenagers, trendsetters and for many celebrities. By wearing vintage sunglasses a person can easily emphasize look elegant and stylish.  Oh and they make a great place to hide! How many out there like to hide behind your sunglasses?

Check out the Carerra Vintage line  at Carrera World … I’m sure you’ll find your “true colors.”
